On May 28, The Co-operative College of the Philippines concluded its insightful two-day training program on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), aptly titled LeaDEIng the Way: Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through Cooperative Identity. This training aimed to equip cooperative leaders and members with essential DEI strategies to foster inclusive, equitable, and diverse cooperative communities, embodying the core principles of the cooperative movement.
The event featured a powerful session with Miss Cathy Statz, an Outreach Specialist from the International Centre for Co-operative Management at Saint Mary’s University. Her engaging and thought-provoking presentation emphasized the significance of integrating DEI principles within cooperative structures. Statz highlighted how embracing diversity and fostering inclusion not only strengthens cooperative identity but also paves the way toward a truly inclusive economy. She underscored the need for cooperatives to lead by example, leveraging DEI as a means to promote fair opportunities, amplify marginalized voices, and enhance economic and social participation across all communities.
The training welcomed a diverse group of participants from cooperatives nationwide. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and activities, attendees explored how DEI strategies can enhance their cooperative journey. Participants were encouraged to assess their own organizations and develop actionable DEI initiatives, fostering environments where all individuals feel respected, valued, and empowered to contribute. These sessions reinforced the idea that diversity within cooperatives is a strength, enabling more resilient, innovative, and connected communities.
By providing this platform for learning and growth, The Co-operative College of the Philippines emphasized its commitment to DEI as a cornerstone of cooperative identity.
